Tampa plaintiff’s civil trial lawyer Gene Odom is partnering with noted male and female fertility experts to form a new charitable organization, designed to give hope to Florida residents who need medical help in conceiving a child. Mr. Odom is working on a final choice for the name of his non-profit charity and lobbying group. High on the list is Second Chance For Baby. Mr. Odom himself received a second chance after being diagnosed with testicular cancer and told he had no chance of conceiving. “I was very lucky, and my wife gave birth to twins despite my diagnosis” of cancer, he said.
Prior to studying and practicing law Mr. Odom pursued a career in the Navy Special Forces, where he learned that infertility is a common problem for military men who are engaged in high-stress physical activity. He is gratified that the first person to join his charity’s team is Dr. Howard Heidenberg, a board certified urologist and a former Chief of Male Fertility at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Mr. Odom said of Dr. Heidenberg, “His knowledge of testicular cancers and other forms of male infertility will give the scientific and medical insight that our foundation needs.” Dr. Heidenberg is joined by his wife Dr. Sandy Goodman, an Ob-Gyn female fertility specialist at the Reproductive Medicine Group.
Mr. Odom’s primary goal for his charity is to provide financial support to families who have been denied insurance coverage for fertility procedures. “Medical insurance claims for fertility treatments are routinely denied due the wording of the policies,” Odom explained. “Even middle income couples can go broke paying for fertility attempts. It is a very expensive process.” The foundation’s second charter is to enact legislation requiring Florida health insurance companies to provide coverage for all fertility treatment. “Infertility is a legitimate concern that interferes with the God-given right to have a child. It is a medical condition for which traditional treatments are available.”
Attorney Gene Odom noted, “As a plaintiff’s courtroom lawyer with the Martinez-Odom Law Group, my job is to make a person whole after a catastrophic loss.
